Textile Glossary

The glossary below includes terms of textile terminology given in multiple issues of the Danish Tidsskrift for Textilteknik. The journals were published by Danmarks Tekstiltekniske Forening ("Denmark's Association for Textile Technique") in the 1940s and 50s. Some of the journals include messages from Terminologicentralen (The Permanent Board of Terminology) in which The Danish Committee for Textile Terminology issues a proposed terminology for terms regarding textiles (wool, spinning etc.).

The glossary covers the 9 proposals published by Terminologicentralen in Tidsskrift for Textilteknik from 1951 to 1956. Note that some proposals are published more than once due to revisions of some of the terms. The sources used for the glossary (so far) are listed at the bottom of the page. The glossary is still a work in progress and we expect to add more sources of textile terminology to the database in the near future.

As of 2024, three leaflets produced by NTF (Nordisk Tekstillærerforbund) have been added to the database under entries no. 134-410. These leaflets, which address textile terminology, differ from the terms from Terminologicentralen in that they do not provide written definitions but instead rely on nonverbal representations.

NTF no. 2 (1977) presents embroidery techniques, and is also a part of the online resource 'Broderihåndbogen’, published by Selskabet for Kirkelig Kunst in Copenhagen.
NTF no. 3 (1979) presents processes and tools related to knitting and crocheting, illustrated through photographs, while NTF no. 4 (1986?) covers various textile tools, depicted through drawings.

At present, NTF no. 1 from this series has not yet been located.

The Fields

There are several functionalities to the textile glossary. The first field show the Danish term, since the primary source texts are in Danish. Next is the conjugation and the Danish definition given by Terminologicentralen in Tidsskrift for Textilteknik (read more about the sources below). The purpose of the glossary is to create an online searchable database that includes as many languages as possible, so the parallel terms are, therefore, the next feature in the glossary.

To make it more searchable, the glossary includes the field “Categories”. This way, you will be able to search by category or simply click on a category and e.g. be shown all terms within the theme of silk.

The last field shows from which source, we have found this definition. Though we will firstly include terms from Tidsskrift for Textilteknik, we hope to include more textile terminology sources. The glossary will therefore be updated regularly.

Grouping

You are able to group the different fields of the glossary to your liking. This is done by clicking the "Group" button at the top of the glossary. You will thereafter see the records organized together based on one (or more) fields of your choosing.

Sorting

Each field can be individually sorted in alphabetical order (forwards and backwards) by clicking the "Sort" button.

Searching

When using the search button, you are searching in all of the fields of the glossary. For example, when searching for "fibre", the results shown will be any term that includes the word fibre in any field e.g. category, parallel term, etc. This also means that the viewer will be able to search for terms in their mother tongue if we have included the term in that language (so far, most terms are in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, French, English or German).
